It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we’ll recommend a slice of top movie viewing that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. This week, it’s Aliens.
James Cameron’s gung-ho sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic sends Warrant Officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) to confront her worst nightmare, in the company of a group of cocky colonial marines who have no idea what’s waiting for them on planet LV-426. Aliens broke new ground in 1986 by turning Ripley into a gutsy maternal warrior and female action icon, which the actress nicknamed “Rambolina”. Moreover, her performance received a landmark Oscar nomination for Best Actress – the first time a female lead had been nominated for a role in an action/science fiction film. And let’s not forget the film’s other alpha female – the majestic and terrifying alien queen, who faces off against Ripley in the film’s spectacular climax.
Four reasons why Aliens rocks:
1. The alien queen, one of the all-time great movie monsters.
2. Bill Paxton as the cowardly Hudson – “Game over man, game over.”
3. Lance Henriksen’s benevolent synthetic, Bishop.
4. Ripley’s powerloader battle with the queen – “Get away from her you bitch!”
