It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we’ll recommend a slice of classic movie viewing that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. This week, it’s Cool Runnings.
A team from sunny Jamaica making it at the 1988 Winter Olympics? What a dumb ide… oh wait, this is based on a true story!
Yes, the Jamaican bobsled team was actually a thing, and this Disneyfied take on it is your classic underdog tale. You basically know how it’s going to end, but the journey is the fun bit. It’s also one of the best feel-good movies going around.
From all reports Cool Runnings takes a lot of liberties with the tale in order to make for an entertaining movie – the team was actually sponsored by rich Americans, other teams weren’t nearly as hostile and unhelpful – but eh, it’s a movie. Sit back, grab some munchies and enjoy!
Four reasons why Cool Runnings rocks:
1. The team practicing in the bathtub.
2. John Candy being peak John Candy (although sadly it was one of his last roles).
3. Cookie-cutter Germans as the bad guys (apologies to any German people reading this).
4. Their theme song – “Jamaica, we have a bobsled team!”
