It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we recommend a classic movie that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and Gremlins is the perfect festive favourite for a Friday.
Cute. Clever. Intelligent. Mischievous. Dangerous.
Kingston Falls, the kind of sleepy small American town that might have sprung from a Norman Rockwell painting, is overrun by miniature monsters at Christmas when Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) doesn’t obey the rules that apply to his strange new present – a cute little critter called a ‘mogwai’ that Billy’s dad discovered in a rundown store in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
Director Joe Dante, a protégé of the great Roger Corman, brings independent spirit and a wicked sense of humour to his first big studio picture, executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Gremlins is a fantastic kids’ horror flick featuring awesome practical creature effects from Chris Walas (The Fly), and is mandatory viewing during the festive season.
Four reasons why Gremlins rocks:
1. Gizmo – the epitome of cute!
2. Spike – the epitome of nasty.
3. Kate’s ghoulish Christmas Eve tale.
4. The gremlins running amok.
