It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we’ll recommend a slice of classic movie viewing that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. This week, it’s Independence Day.
That smushed-up little E.T. fellow may have seemed like a decent enough sort, but the aliens who come to Earth in Independence Day have no intentions of peacefulness. Coming in all guns blazing, they lay waste to strategic points worldwide. It’s up to a bunch of disparate people to come up with a way to bring this race with obviously superior technology down. Can human, erm, ingenuity win out and save us all?
A special effects milestone upon release in 1996, Independence Day not only shocked audiences as they watched the White House vapourised, it also helped the whole disaster movie genre get back on its feet. Those effects, coupled with a superb – and really fun – ensemble cast, helped us to get past the many implausabilities in the story. Hey, you want believability? Watch the news! Uh, then again…
Four reasons why Independence Day rocks
1. Yes, the White House going boom now – a highlight amongst effects highlights (well, for the time).
2. The wonderfully unhinged performance from Randy “Hello boys, I’m ba-ack!” Quaid as Russell Casse – Vietnam vet, crop duster, former alien abductee, hero.
3. Jeff “Don’t say ‘Oops’!” Goldblum as one of Earth’s saviours.
4. The very silly – but ultimately extremely effective – cure for aliens.
