It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we recommend some quality viewing that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. This week, it’s Kick-Ass.
If ever a film lived up to its title, it’s this one! Kick-Ass is right up there with Watchmen (2009) in the subversive comic book/superhero stakes – an ultra-violent action romp with the sensibility of a Judd Apatow flick.
Nerdy teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) elects to become a costumed crime-fighter, despite possessing no special powers or abilities whatsoever. After a couple of failed attempts, he quickly becomes a media sensation with huge public support and joins forces with a former cop turned vigilante (Nicolas Cage) and his tough-talking 11-year-old daughter (Chloë Grace Moretz) to bring down a ruthless crime kingpin.
Ostensibly a teen comedy that plays like a Tarantino flick, Kick-Ass is decidedly un-PC, brutal, bloody and over the top – this sure ain’t Marvel! Filled with crackling (and crass) dialogue and top notch action set pieces, it’s best served with a pizza and your favourite beverage for a fun Friday night in!
Four reasons why Kick-Ass kicks ass:
1. Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy.
2. Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist.
3. Hit-Girl in action.
4. “I’m Kick-Ass.”
