It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we recommend some quality viewing that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. This week, it’s La La Land.
6 Academy Awards, 6 Golden Globes, unanimous acclaim from critics and audiences. In 2016, the world fell in love with director Damien Chazelle’s musical-romance.
La La Land is a thoroughly endearing story about falling in love and following your dreams; it’s charming without being overly twee or sugarcoated, and bittersweet when you least expect it. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s mutual attraction is the kind that inspires them to break into a Fred and Ginger routine under a lamppost in a deserted parking lot, but that’s more about Chazelle’s vision to create a contemporary romance with an old fashioned Hollywood flavour – capturing the magic of the movies in the same fashion as 2011’s Best Picture Oscar winner, The Artist.
Even if you’re the sort to run a mile at the mere mention of watching a musical, this one will win you over. It’s as light as the popcorn you’ll be munching and a film that will put a big smile on your face.
Four reasons why La La Land rocks:
1. The production design.
2. The palpable chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
3. The jazz numbers with John Legend and The Messengers.
4. A finale that subverts genre conventions.
