It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we’ll recommend a slice of classic movie viewing that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. This week, it’s This Is Spinal Tap.
Ground zero for the rock “mockumentary’, writer/director Rob Reiner, and the Tap’s three writer alter egos Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean probably didn’t realise the raging trouser beast of a comedy they were set to unleash back in 1984. Well, unless they did.
Seemingly inspired by a collision of Status Quo and Led Zeppelin, fellow Brits Spinal Tap’s career is waning, and an attempt at an American comeback tour doesn’t exactly go swimmingly. Documentarian Marty DiBergi (Reiner) is there to capture it all, from intimate interviews (and intimate vegetables) through to tensions that may eventually see the Tap turned off – and all interspersed with heavy rockin’ classics such as ‘Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight’, ‘Sex Farm’ and ‘Big Bottom’.
Four reasons why This Is Spinal Tap rocks
1. “This goes to 11.”
2. The Derek Smalls trouser helper zucchini incident.
