It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we’ll recommend a slice of classic movie viewing that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. This week, it’s The Dark Crystal.
Muppet-master Jim Henson took a walk on the darker side with his fascinating tale of good vs evil The Dark Crystal, crafting what has gone on to become a fantasy classic.
Things really can be drilled down to a pure tale of good and evil in what was the first non-animated feature film to be (visibly) human-free. Centuries ago, a magic crystal on the planet of Thra cracked. From this fissure two new races ventured forth – the good Mystics (yay!), and the evil Skepsis (boo!). Years later, young Gelfling Jen, one of the only survivors of his race after they were obliterated by the Skepsis, learns of the upcoming Great Conjunction, whereby Thra’s three suns will align. He also learns that he is to save the world, by finding a missing shard and healing the magical Crystal, thus restoring peace to a warring world.
Four reasons why The Dark Crystal rocks:
1. Visits the dark side of Muppetry.
2. Gets viewers in touch with their inner childlike wonder again.
3. “Trial by stone!”
