It’s STACK‘s Friday Flick time, where each week we’ll recommend a slice of classic movie viewing that’s sure to get your weekend off to a great start. This week, it’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
It’s astounding to think that The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a flop when it first played to bewildered audiences back in 1975. Based on the stage production created by Richard O’Brien, this lurid musical homage to ’50s sci-fi films, comic books and cross dressing has since become one of the greatest cult movies of all time.
Naive newlyweds Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) encounter aliens from the planet Transsexual (in the galaxy of Transylvania) and give themselves over to absolute pleasure. Sarandon reveals she can sing as well as she can act; Tim Curry dives into the role of Frank-N-Furter with a conviction he hasn’t displayed since; and a motorcycling Meatloaf pops up for a song before being (appropriately) served up as dinner. One of the best audience partici… pation musicals still works at home, where you can sing, recite dialogue and be a wild and an untamed thing all from the comfort of the couch. Just don’t forget the rice, newspaper and fishnets.
Four reasons why Rocky Horror rocks:
1. Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter – A Scientist.
2. The Time Warp.
3. Brad and Janet.
4. The soundtrack.
