Director Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 horror classic is now complete, with the movie bound for the European Film Market in Berlin next week.

One of the more contentious remakes of a horror film for some time, given its cult following and critical acclaim, reimagining Suspiria has been a passion project for the Italian filmmaker who is best known for I Am Love and more recently A Bigger Splash.

Characterised by its lavish production design, stylised violence and sinister score by prog-rockers Goblin, Argento’s original film told the terrifying story of an American student who discovers that her German ballet school is a front for a witches coven.

Original star Jessica Harper will appear in the remake alongside Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton and Chloë Grace Moretz. Both Johnson and Swinton starred in Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splash in 2015.

Horror fans have every right to be incensed at the remaking of an “untouchable classic”, but let’s wait and see how it turns out. At the very least, Tilda Swinton will be a fantastic Madame Blanc and Guadagnino’s arthouse credentials bode well.
