The best new sci-fi series to fly under the radar gets even better in its second season.

With a nine-book saga to draw upon, The Expanse is just warming up. Dovetailing events from the first book Leviathan Wakes into the second, Caliban’s War, the show eschews the GoT approach of adapting one book per season, allowing the narrative to, er, expand without shortchanging the characters, action, and politicking. The tension between Earth and Mars continues to escalate, as Holden and the crew of the Rocinante race to contain the alien protomolecule that is spreading through the Eros asteroid, where Miller discovers the horrifying truth about Julie Mao’s fate. There’s also a major incident on Ganymede involving abducted children and a mysterious alien. Gritty, hard SF in the tradition of Battlestar Galactica, and highly recommended.
