As viewers, we can’t seem to get enough of social misfits bearing the prefix of doctor, be it in The Big Bang Theory, its prequel Young Sheldon, or Alan Cumming in Instinct.

The precursor to it all was the hugely popular House, starring Hugh Laurie. So fans of this savant-inspired sub-genre should take note when House showrunner David Shore returns to guide The Good Doctor. Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel) is Dr. Shaun Murphy, whose autism manifests in an ability to hold volumes of medical information while also not being able to look anyone in the eye. And he always speaks the truth – no matter how hurtful it may be. Dr. House may have been prickly but here, Shore is committed to delivering the warm and fuzzy, despite the doc’s suspect bedside manner.
