“There is nothing wrong with your television set… Do not attempt to adjust the picture… We are controlling transmission.”
This 1960s anthology series is a cousin to the original Twilight Zone, albeit with a greater emphasis on sci-fi themes (having been first broadcast in the shadow of the atomic age), a dash of gothic horror, and a new monster/alien every week – all rendered in eerie black-and-white. A remake appeared during the ‘90s, but of course the original remains the best, and some episodes are frighteningly prescient, reflecting current concerns like China vs US and global eavesdropping.
There are some cracking episodes including The Galaxy Being, in which a radio station picks up an alien transmission; The Architects of Fear, offering a radical solution to world peace; ingenious time travel yarn The Man Who Was Never Born; and The Sixth Finger, a cautionary tale about speeding up human evolution. And then of course there’s the stellar line-up of special guest stars including Martin Landau, Leonard Nimoy, Vera Miles, Robert DuVall and Donald Pleasance.
All 49 episodes have now been collected on DVD and also in a beautiful Limited Hardbox Blu-ray Edition that includes a 60-page illustrated booklet and a wealth of bonus features. Fans of sci-fi and vintage TV should grab the Blu-ray set pronto, while stocks last.
