If you’re a parent (or aunty…) who’s always on the look out for great kids movie entertainment that you can also enjoy without wanting to jam a crayon in your ear, then you likely discovered the first Paddington movie.
It took the story of the beloved bear from deepest, darkest Peru and gave it a bit of an update, but kept all of it’s silliness and charm intact – without getting all sticky, icky saccharine. That’s quite a feat. Then again, it was directed by The Mighty Boosh guy Paul King, which may help explain why it was so entertaining.
It was deservedly successful, so a sequel – simply titled Paddington 2 – is now heading down the release tracks towards cinema screens.
Paddington has now happily settled with the Brown family and has become a popular member of the local community. With Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday looming, he takes on a series of odd jobs so that he can buy the perfect present. But then it’s stolen. What’s a bear to do?
King is back in the director’s chair for Paddington 2, while Ben Whishaw returns as the voice of Paddington. The entire Brown family – Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin – also return, along with Jim Broadbent. The addition of Hugh Grant makes proceedings even more delightfully British, while Brendan Gleeson gets to do the bad guy thing.
Paddington 2 will pop into Aussie cinemas on December 26.
