If John Corbett, 59, is perhaps best known for his role as Carrie Bradshaw’s younger love interest, Aidan, in Sex and the City, then in real life he’s even more commitment shy than Carrie, spending the past 19 years with actress Bo Derek, 63, without putting a ring on it.
Hooking up on a blind date four years after the death of Derek’s much-older husband, director John Derek, in 1998, the couple now happily resides on Derek’s Santa Barbara ranch where they ride their prize horses.
Here Corbett is able to indulge his passion for making country music, even touring with Lisa Marie Presley and ZZ Top to promote his songs.
Derek turned heads early on in her career starring in the hit movie 10 with Dudley Moore, which she followed with Tarzan the Ape Man and the raunchy Bolero. However, she has not enjoyed any commercial success since the late ‘90s, resigned to featuring in two Sharknado sequels.
Trained as a hair stylist, Corbett’s greatest strength has been in romantic comedy, featuring in films Baby on Board, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and its sequel, plus the big screen’s Sex and the City 2. He was also a fan-favourite in the ‘90s TV series Northern Exposure, playing radio DJ Chris Stevens.
Corbett is certainly happy to have landed in such a soft spot with the still beautiful Derek. “We have a nice little ranch where we ride horses. We don’t have children, but we have furry ‘children’ – German shepherds and Irish wolfhounds,” he says.
“Bo’s whole family lives near us. Her sisters and their husbands and children are two miles away and we spend a lot of time with them, weekends and barbecues. The weather’s always pretty nice where we live, so I ride motorcycles and play guitar. It’s a fun life.”
