We all know Eminem (aka Marshall Mathers, Slim Shady, Ken Kaniff) uses his art to express his deepest, darkest emotions: insights into the thoughts, troubles and experiences that have affected him over his life. The terrible upbringing? The troubles with his Mum? The on again/off again romance with childhood sweetheart Kim? Yeah – we’ve all heard it.
But as it’s the blonde one’s 44th birthday today, here are a few things that you probably didn’t know.
♦ At nine years old, Marshall Mathers III was beaten so badly by a school bully he spent over a week in a coma.
♦ The first ever rap song Eminem heard was Ice T’s Reckless (released in 1984).
♦ Eminem’s Grandmother has been married five times and has six children from three of the marriages.
♦ For 18 months, Elton John helped Mathers kick his addictions to Vicodin, Ambien and other prescription drugs.
♦ Despite the open feud between the King of Pop and Slim Shady , Michael Jackson co-owned the rights to numerous Eminem tracks.
♦ The name Eminem is taken from his initials M and M (his middle name Bruce is not featured).
♦ He has custody of four children: his daughter, his ex-wife’s niece, his ex-wife’s daughter from another relationship and his younger half brother.
