If you’re a fan of teensy mythical, magical types then you’ll already know that Saturday was ‘Leprechaun Day’. In belated celebration (we may have partied a wee bit hard), here are six songs that are somehow related to little fairy tale creatures…
This Mortal Coil – Song to the Siren
In Greek mythology the Sirens were dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. In actuality they inspired this Tim Buckley song, this cover of which is one of the most haunting songs to ever emanate from 4AD – and that’s a big call.
The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale of New York
OK, so a drunken argument Christmas song doesn’t strictly fit the profile, but the word ‘Fairy’ is in there and any excuse to revel in this masterpiece is OK by us. Also, the much-missed Kirsty MacColl spitting “You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot. Happy Christmas your arse I pray God it’s our last” at Shane MacGowan is priceless.
David Bowie – The Laughing Gnome
We all know that everything the genius that was Bowie touched wasn’t incredible – after all, the 1980s existed. Erm, and the ’90s. This much-maligned gem from back in 1967 though is sublime. Really! It may sound like some crappy kiddy song, but the deep underlying metaphoric relevance to… nah, it’s just a wonderfully silly song.
Paddy and the Rats – Song of a Leprechaun
We had to dredge up something properly thematically related, and here it is in all its pub punk glory! We send our praise to Hungary for coming up with the best musical tribute (that we could track down) to Ireland’s mischievous little bearded folk. After all, it is actually their day today.
Pixies – Monkey Gone to Heaven
Pixies are a fixture of British folklore, but let’s face it, most know them as one of the most influential bands ever (and they’re totally one of our absolute all-time faves). Rumours that we came up with this whole list just so that we could include the Pixies may or may not be completely accurate.
Tame Impala – Elephant
At this juncture you might be thinking that we’re just taking the piss. After all, elephants aren’t mythical, and they’re certainly not little. But please hear us out. Tame Impala… Tame Imp… Imp – an imp is a mythological being similar to a fairy or goblin. Ha! We win! As does everybody, actually, ’cos this is one cracking tune.
