After a slight delay to get things perfect, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 will be with us early next month. STACK spoke with the game’s lead level designer, Daniel Sławiński, to get an idea as to what we can expect.
What do you think is the greatest new thing for players to look forward to from this latest iteration of Sniper Ghost Warrior?
Definitely long-range shots. This is something our fans were asking us for and we decided to deliver it with Contracts 2. For the first time in the Sniper Ghost Warrior series players will be able to take down targets from extreme distances – more than 1000 metres. These maps are handcrafted to provide engaging and solid gameplay, and they’re also interesting because the basic gameplay loop is much different from what we saw in the previous iteration. Be ready for challenging maps and a lot of new sniping experience!
How has the contracts system evolved since the last outing?
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts was well-received by players, that’s why in Contracts 2 we decided to keep the same formula. This time we will have 24 contracts and a range of side activities across five extensive maps in the different Middle East areas. Players will be able to revisit each contract and try to finish it in a different way, or to just complete all objectives and collect maximum rewards. That gives the player freedom to tackle the challenges as they see fit.
Please tell us more about the story that we’re in for this time around…
Players take on the role of Reaper, a contract sniper assassin operating in the heart of a lawless region of the Middle East along the Lebanese and Syrian borders. They’re tasked with a seemingly impossible mission – to topple an insidious criminal syndicate and bring them to justice.
Do any particular real-world events provide influence for the story?
No, in the Sniper Ghost Warrior series our main idea is to deliver the most realistic and challenging sniping experience. Still, it is a game and it’s supposed to be fun, so we are trying to balance that realistic/arcade line. That’s why all games from the series are exclusively designed around the experience of being a sniper, but we don’t want players to spend hours waiting for opportunity. We don’t focus on politics there or other events. From the real-world that we want to implement into the game comes physics, ballistics, weather impact and so on. Each time we change location so players are able to have a feel of different places and regions, but they can also choose what they like most (jungle, cold Siberia or, like this time, the Middle East).
What’s your personal favourite way of taking out an enemy in-game?
Definitely a long-range shot. Being undetected and catching an enemy by surprise is what I’m looking for in sniping games. Then I can feel like a real sniper who needs to spend sometimes even a few days staying undetected. Luckily in-game I don’t need to wait for such a long time! Also, taking a long-range shot I wait for a bullet cam – that looks really satisfying to me.
What do you most wish for players to gain from the Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 experience?
First of all, I hope that they spend a great time with the game having a lot of fun, but also maybe to learn of tactical thinking, ballistics and discover a new region for themselves, as some things may not be obvious.
Are you prepared to hint at any special Easter eggs or other hidden goodies that players should keep an eye out for?
I don’t want to reveal everything, but who knows? Keep your eyes open!
