Mortal Kombat 11 has burst forth from its shackles and into the big wide world. A little while back, STACK had the opportunity to speak to the series co-creator Ed Boon about just what to expect in the latest iteration of the legendary fighting game.
Mortal Kombat is right up there as one of the top fighting franchises. What weight of expectation does that put on you when coming up with a new entry in the series?
Living up to the Mortal Kombat legacy is something we take very seriously. We’ve been lucky enough to have the last two MK games (MK9 and MKX) be the best-selling of the entire series, so there are high expectations for Mortal Kombat 11. Being perfectionists, we are never completely content with our games, but we are confident that MK11 will live up to the expectations.
What dramas is the Earthrealm in for this time around? Who’s the “big bad”? What’s their angle?
Not only Earthrealm, but all of existence in being threatened this time around. The big bad is named Kronika, who is the first female (and most powerful) boss ever in any Mortal Kombat game. She is the keeper of time and has been orchestrating ALL of the events in the MK timeline since the first one. She orchestrated everything. Every boss was part of her plan… Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Shinnok, Onaga, etc. She planned to have Shinnok win, but Raiden ruined that when he cut Shinnok’s head off. Now she is determined to reset time to start over again.
When the Mortal Kombat franchise started back in 1992, graphical technology allowed for digitized characters, which were high tech for the time but are ultra-primitive today. This made the gruesomeness almost cartoonish. How has new graphical technology helped the development process?
Ironically the latest technology has allowed us to achieve today’s version of digitized characters and environments. We now use photographs of real people and objects to generate the 3D models in Mortal Kombat 11. We “paint” our models with materials and substances, rather than simple colour or textures. In some ways using these real people and objects for today’s games is a throwback to the method we used back in 1992 to make the first Mortal Kombat game. This is one of the reasons why MK11 looks so much better than our previous games.
What’s the most extreme new Fatality that we have to look forward to in Mortal Kombat 11?
There are a few that really stand out as extreme. Off the top of my head, Baraka eating your brain and Geras hitting you on the back of the head so hard that your face and brain come off are two big ones. They are all so over the top, it’s just ridiculous. In a good way!

Does Mortal Kombat 11 see anything new in the way of special moves?
Yes, every Mortal Kombat game introduces new special moves. Mortal Kombat 11 REALLY expands on this by letting players choose their favourite special moves and equip them to their fighters to create their own variation of that fighter. For example, Scorpion might have ten possible special moves to choose from that players can mix and match to build their custom version. Combining this feature with the ability to choose their costume… we can’t WAIT to see the creative fighter variations players are going to create!
Can we look forward to any other outsiders making it into Mortal Kombat 11, like previous inclusions of Alien, the Predator, God of War’s Kratos, etc.?
I really don’t want to spoil any surprises we have planned for the game after it launches. Those surprise announcements are part of the fun of our games. But I can tell you that in our previous titles (Mortal Kombat and Injustice) the guest fighters have been the most popular additions to the rosters. Freddy, Kratos, Alien, Predator and Jason were all fan-favourites. So, you shouldn’t be surprised if you were to see guest fighters…
Are there any hidden characters or levels for us to look out for as we go?
Mortal Kombat 11 doesn’t have the old-school hidden characters that unlock with a secret controller input, like in the arcade days. But there are going to be plenty of additional DLC fighters added to the roster after the game launches. This game is going to continue to grow and grow over time. We have some very exciting things planned for Mortal Kombat 11!
Have any new modes been added since Mortal Kombat X?
Yes, in addition to our klassic Mortal Kombat game modes like ‘Story’, ‘Krypt’ and ‘Arcade’, MK11 introduces new game modes like ‘Towers of Time’, ‘AI Battle’ and other new experiences to play online. Also, we are planning on introducing additional new modes AFTER the game launches… in addition to releasing new DLC fighters to the roster.
So Ed, do you have a personal favourite character to play as? If so, why them?
Scorpion. He is now, and always will be my favourite Mortal Kombat character.
