Apex Legends, Fortnite, DC Universe Online, Paladins… all these games have one thing in common, which is that they’re free to play. Now a new contender is entering the ring in Xbox exclusive CrossfireX.
This upcoming FPS from developers Smilegate, an upgrade of their PC-based Crossfire, channels Call of Duty, Counter Strike and even a bit of classic Wolfenstein/Quake/DOOM/Halo vibe. We grabbed some one-on-one time with the closed beta, and it may be worth your while getting onboard.
CrossfireX is a multiplayer FPS shooter where two teams are pitted against each other in a variety of game modes. There are the standard attack/defend points, or eliminate the enemy team, but there are also two ways to play. Classic mode will have traditonal FPS mechanics like what we get in Quake, Halo, Wolfenstein and DOOM, with hip fire shooting and the only aiming accomplished with scoped weapons such as rifles. Modern mode, meanwhile, will play more like our current FPS games such as Call of Duty, where you aim down sights, sprint and use some perks.
During the closed beta, we tasted three separate maps, plus multiple weapons and game modes. There are standard weapons like the AK-47, the M-14 and Desert Eagle, but you’ll also be able to use classic and iconic weapons like a Tommy Gun. Each of these weapons have a realistic and hefty kick behind them and weapon damage also feels realistic. Get hit with a sniper in the chest or head and you’re out!
Being a free-to-play model, and noting that we played in closed beta, we encountered a couple of connectivity and technical issues, but that’s what betas are for. With its multiple ways to play, weapon variety and the fact that it’s free-to-play, there’s no reason not to take a look at CrossfireX when it releases later in 2020.
A CrossfireX open beta kicks off for all Xbox One players starting June 25 and concluding June 28. As a bonus, all who play a match during the open beta will be rewarded with the beta-exclusive X-B.C. Axe weapon skin when the game launches later this year.
