The Assassin’s Creed series has always plundered historical sources to great effect. Rome, London, paris… but Assassin’s Creed Origins may be its greatest triumph as it immerses us in everything ancient Egypt.
There’s more to the time than pyramids, over-bandaged bodies and big lion/human hybrid statue thingies with broken schnozzes, and the game intends to go there. One big historical waypoint is the use of heiroglyphics. This has led Ubisoft to ponder whether machine learning can help us translate the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt.
As such, they’ve started ‘The Hieroglyphics Initiative’, exploring new technological avenues to help historians in their studies of Egyptology.
