Microsoft has officially announced it will cease production of Kinect units.
Aw. As temperamental as some might find the Xbox cameras, Kinect undoubtedly had a home in many households. For me, at least, it was a lazy well to tell my console to do things without even having to use the controller. We even used it for Just Dance. Sometimes.
The camera was first released in 2010 alongside the Xbox 360, and was then bundled with Xbox One consoles at launch. Once Microsoft stopped shipping the unit with its consoles (and didn’t require it to be plugged in at all times), all the signs were there that Kinect was facing a slow demise.
Now, the company has confirmed it will stop manufacturing the devices, and once retailers run out, that’ll be it. Of course, if you’ve still got one at home it’ll still work, but there’s no telling how long devs will be supporting it.
R.I.P. Kinect. It was fun while it lasted.
