In case you’re not up with the times, shrunken old school consoles are the “in” thing, and Sony are out to capitalise on it with their PlayStation Classic and its 20 games.

A wee little version of the original PlayStation, complete with replica original styled thumbstick-free controllers, Sony had been cagey as to what games would be built in to the unit, only initially announcing five of them.

Now we have all 20, and the list is… interesting:

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

OK, so Twisted Metal is a cool addition, and the original GTA should be a bit of “Ah, memories” fun – plus we adore the puzzletasticness of Mr Driller. Oh, and big points for including all of the ace fun of Destruction Derby. Still, we’re a little surprised at the absence of such stalwart classics as Gran Turismo and, in particular, Wipeout in any of its several incarnations. Plus, original PlayStation games don’t get much more seminal than Lara Croft in her pointier days with the debut of the still-running Tomb Raider series.

There being no Spyro and Crash we can understand, as the rights have moved on, and they’ve been given the remaster treatment quite recently. Still, we guess Wipeout has too, and the current gen implementation is pretty much faultless.

So, will you be slapping $149 down for a PlayStation Classic on December 3? If so, it may be worth pre-ordering now to avoid possible disappointment.
