Back in the 1990s, arcade game manufacturer SNK provided many alternatives to the pixelated biffo Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. One of the most challenging of these was the oddly-spelled, sword-infused Samurai Shodown.
Mind you, that’s its western title, as in Japan it’s known as Samurai Spirits. Which seems a perfectly cromulent name to us. Anyway, it’s been an ongoing franchise ever since, and the latest iteration is actually hitting home before it launches in the arcades.
This first new game in 11 years is simply entitled Samurai Shodown, and is a reboot of the series that’s set between the first game and SS5.
It’s fair to say that SS has never looked this good. But as well as gorgeous graphics, the nuts and bolts of the series that made it so special have been retained, with faithful reproduction of the game mechanics.
There’s also a very cool new feature, whereby the game learns from what players do in the way of game actions and patterns and uses the data to create more challenging CPU players. Like the game isn’t challenging enough to begin with!
Samurai Shodown is available now for PS4 and Xbox One, and is coming soon to Switch (and arcades). Get in quick – like before Sunday, June 30 – and score the season pass for free!
