In what’s been a fairly badly-kept secret, a slimmed down version of the Nintendo Switch – the Switch Lite – is set for launch… and soon!
Unlike the existing Switch, this one’s been designed purely for handheld use, with no connections to allow it to dock to a TV, and also no rumble function or IR camera functionality. It’s smaller, lighter and the controllers are built into it.
This new unit can play all existing Switch games – some 2000-plus – although some will have restrictions. You’ll need to check game packaging for a handheld symbol to ensure compatability.
You’ll be able to grab the Nintendo Switch Lite from September 20 at $329, in a choice of colours from yellow, turquoise and the comparatively drab dark grey. You can pre-order from JB Hi-Fi here.
A special edition has already been announced to tie in with Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield in November, too. Here it is:
The light grey ‘Zacian & Zamazenta Edition’ system will hit on November 8, featuring cyan and magenta buttons and illustrations of the two new Legendary Pokémon. It will cost the same as the standard colours, but won’t include the game, which launches separately on November 15.
Here’s a fairly chunky introductory video to the Switch Lite (as distinct, of course, from the light switch):
