Sonic the Hedgehog is 30 this year. For those of us who played with him on Mega Drive it may be a sobering thought, but at least we’ll be cheered up with some fab new releases and merch.

An inaugural ‘Sonic Central’ event has revealed all sorts of wonders, which is apparently only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to milestone celebratory stuff in the pipeline.

The biggest gaming announcement was the forthcoming Sonic Colours: Ultimate, which is coming for PS4, Xbox and Switch on September 7. Promising “stunning visuals, additional features, a new mode, and improved gameplay enhancements” over the 2010 original, it’ll be available in a lovely-looking special edition complete with baby Sonic keychain. Pre-order now at JB Hi-Fi, and have a quick look at it now:

Sonic is also doing some guest appearances, with spots coming up in Two Point Hospital, as well as the forthcoming Lost Judgment and Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game.

Then there’s the merch, which will include some wild bling, coins, a stunning-looking encyclopedia – or “encyclo-speed-ia”” – and a super-cool Eggman mech.

The Sonic Central featured other bits and pieces – including the tease of a new game in 2022. Check it all out right here:
