If you’ve picked up Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo’s Switch – and you wouldn’t be alone, as it’s the speediest selling Mario Kart ever – then you may have noticed that it’s a bit, well, easy.
There’s a very good reason for this, as to help beginners Nintendo have included ‘Smart Steering’ and ‘Auto Accelerate’ features in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
This is a good thing if you’re just starting out, however not only do they default to ‘on’ – even allowing you to put down your controller and let it race itself, often claiming a podium finish – there are also no instructions as to how to turn them off. Sigh, we miss those lovely game manuals.
Anyway, if you’ve been wondering how to disable these assists it’s quite simple. You just have to press the ‘+’ button on your controller during gameplay, whereby options will pop up allowing you to go from automatic to (clutch-free) manual.
Anyway, enough talk, let’s race!
