It’s the quote every EA Sports fan recognizes. But who was the man behind the voice?

It’s 1992 and Toronto-based journalist Andrew Anthony has been working for The Guardian for two years.

An old buddy who works in the advertising agency in the U.S has received a request from a fledgling video game company to conceive an idea for a television ad. He asks Anthony if he could do a voiceover for the ad for free if he paid for him to come down. Eager to score a free trip to see an old friend, Anthony agrees.

The original quote Anthony was told to voice was “If it’s in the game, EA Sports is in the game” and this is subsequently shortened. Expecting never to hear the quote again, Anthony returns to Toronto.

24 years later it remains an iconic inclusion on EA Sports titles.
