Apple have held a virtual “Event” in which they’ve announced their latest and greatest tech.
Proceedings kicked off with the HomePod Mini speaker. Coming in grey or white, Apple are promising that it’ll deliver “room-filling sound” that’s “nothing short of amazing”. At only 8.5 centimetres tall the unit may be diminutive, but packs a wallop power-wise as a controller for your entire smart home via Siri. You can even hook two of them up in the same room and create a stereo pair.
What everybody was keen to hear about, of course, was new iPhones, and Apple delivered.
The iPhone 12 will come in four flavours, promising speedy 5G connectivity as a key selling point, along with an edge-to-edge OLED display, night mode and Dolby Vision HDR for the camera and ceramic shield to help save your prized communications tool if you have a klutzy drop-the-phone moment.
The model range includes the straight iPhone 12, which is 16 per cent lighter and 11 per cent thinner than its predecessor, and packing a 6.1-inch display. It’ll be available in black, white, red, green and blue, as will the iPhone 12 Mini, which, as the name suggests, is smaller, featuring a 5.4-inch display.
If you want to move up to the flagship model, then the iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max may be what you’re after. Set to release in gold, silver, graphite or “Pacific” blue, these two models are forged from surgical grade stainless steel and pack 6.7-inch and 6.1 inch screens, respectively, and beefed up camera capabilities. They also include LiDAR tech, as used by NASA, to improve augmented reality functionality.
Finally, a range of magnetic accessories – known as ‘MagSafe’ – were unveiled, including case, wallet and charger options that just snap onto your iPhone magnetically.
Pre-orders for the new additions to the Apple range will kick off soon. If you have the time, here’s the full Apple Event:
