The Arlo Essential 1080p Spotlight Camera offers a home security solution for the budget-conscious.

Employing an electrician to install even a basic security system can be an exceptionally expensive experience, so I’m often asked by friends and colleagues to recommend a cost-effective DIY security solution for their homes.

Installing a quality off-the-shelf system that connects via the home network is a relatively easy proposition, and for those on a tight budget or who don’t need multiple points around the house/office covered, Arlo – a company with an excellent reputation in home security – has the solution with an all-new device.

The Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera is loaded with features. Aesthetically, it looks similar to the Arlo Pro 3 range of cameras, albeit a little lighter in weight. The biggest drawcard is that you won’t need the Arlo Hub or another smart hub to connect the device, giving it complete autonomy. Set-up is a breeze: download the Arlo app, connect as a new device across your Wi-Fi, pair and you’re up and away.

But what exactly do you get for your money? Well, as it stands, quite a lot. For starters, the entire unit is weatherproof, so it can be mounted anywhere outside. Video is recorded in 1080p and night vision is captured in colour. The camera has a built-in spotlight that throws out a lot of illumination when motion is sensed. A personal favourite is the two-way audio, which comes in handy if you’re home alone and in the bathroom when someone calls, or out on a walk. Watching a courier swing around trying to find the source of your voice is priceless. And if you do survey any suspicious activity over the camera when you’re not home, you can activate a piercing siren through the app. A word of warning though – if you have kids, don’t show them this feature…

In order to access the complete suite of features and save recordings to the cloud you’ll need an Arlo Smart subscription, although the camera does come with a three-month complimentary trial period. However, if you just want to save recordings and you own an Arlo Hub, you can plug in an external hard drive via the USB port and record that way.

So, is this something I should consider?

Easy to install and set-up, the Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera offers an economic security alternative to a costly multi-camera set-up for the home or office. It comes with a wide range of features that will fit just about every application, from a name in home security that can be trusted. If you’re looking for an affordable home or office security solution, the Essential Spotlight Camera from Arlo deserves closer inspection.
