Stylish and feature-packed, the Suunto 7 is a great performing smartwatch.
This is Finnish watch company Suunto’s first full step into smartwatch territory. It utilises Google Wear OS technology, so you have Google Fit, Google Play, Google Pay and Google Assistant at the ready on your wrist.
The first thing you notice when you pull the Suunto 7 out of the box is the size of the AMOLED touchscreen – at 50mm, it’s substantial, but that doesn’t mean an adverse effect in weight. However, the large face may not be – literally – a good fit for a user with thin wrists, so it’s a good idea to head in-store and size it up if that’s the case.
The face is protected by scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and, overall, the build quality is excellent. This is a robust smartwatch that will take some punishment. An attractive bezel wraps around the circumference of the watch face, and the silicone strap ensures the Suunto 7 is comfortable to wear all day long.
“This is a robust smartwatch that will take some punishment.”
A feature-rich smartwatch designed for the active, it has fitness tracking for over 70 sports onboard, a GPS tracker with maps that can be used both on and offline (ideal if you don’t want to carry your phone with you), and a consistent heart rate monitor.
Fitness tracking is comprehensive, with performance data collected through the Google Fit app. Sports tracking can be found – and subsequently analysed – via the proprietary Suunto app. In terms of overall tracking, the Suunto 7 has you well and truly covered.
Waterproof for up to 50 metres, the Suunto 7 is an ideal option for swimming and surfing. When paired with a smartphone, email, text messages and phone notifications are displayed and you can control your music directly, too. Google Pay offers complete flexibility for when you’re out on the road and you need to pick up a water or that post-run coffee.
Suunto state that battery life for moderate use is two days, which checks out, although you’ll be best served charging it every day. If you’re regularly accessing the GPS function and generally noodling a lot more with the tracking data, you’ll chew through the battery life faster.
Overall, the Suunto 7 is a solid performer combining a GPS and sports tracker with the feature-packed functionality of a smartwatch. A well-built smartwatch, its fitness tracking and data analysing is excellent, and its sharp design means it looks good on your wrist.
