While most of us can tell the difference between a top loader and a front-loading washing machine, when faced with a shop full of washers and dryers, where to start can be a little intimidating.
It always pays to do your independent research in advance, but the following laundry considerations have been handpicked to offer a wide scope of needs across a broad range of budgets.
Today’s clean machines bend the rules when it comes to colours, and this is the case with the LG WV9, finished in eye-catching black steel. AI tech in this washer will detect the type of fabric in the load and set the right wash accordingly. A direct-drive motor dispenses with a belt and offers six varied ways to wash your clothes. Washes can be timed with the option of a 3–19-hour delay start, and the machine can finish half a load in just 39 minutes. Throw in smart support through the ThinQ app and you can monitor the wash, watch your energy use, and even set an alert when the wash is completed.

The perfect companion to the LG washer is the LG heat pump dryer. It rates as a whopping 9 stars for energy consumption, so you won’t have to wait until midnight or the weekend to do your laundry. An allergy care cycle will help alleviate 99.9 per cent of live dust mites, making it a good option for allergy sufferers. A built-in sensor will control the drying time and prevent clothes from over-heating.
If space is an issue, the tumble dryer can be stacked on top of the washer and a reversible hinge will enable the door to be fitted on either side of the dryer.
The ThinQ app adds all the monitoring smarts, and a smart pairing feature will link up the washer and dryer so by the time the washing is finished, the dryer will automatically set the required drying cycle.

This Wi-Fi-enabled Haier washer doesn’t use steam to kill that magic 99.9 per cent number of all bacteria, but rather a UV light. There are 14 wash cycles including a steam refresh option that will both deodorise and de-wrinkle your clothes, and a smart dosing system ensures you have the right mix of detergent for the job at hand. An eco-setting reduces electricity use by 44 per cent and water usage by 25 litres, and a Speed Up function will shorten the length of most wash cycles. For a super quick wash, there’s a 15-minute Express cycle. How many times have you started a wash and found other clothing you need to add?
With this washer, you can pause a cycle and add clothing and when the wash is complete, the drum lights up so you can check for any errant socks.

A steam refresh cycle is perfect for when you pull out and want to revive your summer clothes and don’t want to put them through a full wash. An express 30-minute cycle works well if you’re in a rush to dry something, and the Haier includes a technology designed to untangle sheets and clothes through an air circulation system. A high-temperature setting will banish the dust mites and bacteria.

Do you hate the ironing board? Then the steam refresh cycle is for you. Perfect for lightly soiled clothing, the 20-minute cycle gently cleans and refreshes without the wear and tear of a full wash and will de-wrinkle garments. Feature-packed at a price that won’t break the bank, Samsung’s front load washer comes complete with 22 wash programs; there’s an applicable setting for all laundry needs. A steam cycle will purportedly kill 99.9 per cent of bacteria and allergens, and a handy AI control recognises the most frequent cycles used in the home and will even suggest these cycles when you’re ready to wash. Loads of up to 2kg can utilise the quick 15-minute cycle, and a quiet function called Silent Wash will minimise the risk of waking family members through the night. There’s even a setting that will exclusively clean the drum scale build-up. Smart support comes from Samsung’s SmartThings app, which offers cycle suggestions and a troubleshooting service.

Packing the same AI technology as its washing counterpart, the Samsung dryer will also remember frequently used cycles and offer setting suggestions. Sensors in the dryer determine the best drying conditions for your load and 14 programs will accommodate whatever drying conditions are required. Small loads can use the quick 35-minute setting and for anti-ironers (who isn’t?), a wrinkle-free cycle will do most of the hard work for you. The dryer has a reversible door to fit any laundry space configuration, and connected support from the SmartThings app will recommend optimal cycles and identify any potential problems to keep the heat running.

Heat pump technology has been around for over ten years and it’s become the dryer of choice for many Australian homes. Why? It’s the most energy-efficient dryer on the market with ratings of up to 9 stars on some models. Conventional vented dryers are expensive to run, and unless they’re ducted externally, they release the hot humid air during use, turning the house into a sauna. Heat pump dryers use a different technology; warm air is passed through the clothes, stripping them of the moisture which is collected in a condenser. The condenser leads to a removable tank, or the dryer can be plumbed directly into an outlet hose. The remaining air is reheated, and the process begins again and cycles continuously until the clothes are dry; the warm air is never heated to the point that it will damage clothing. Heat pump dryers are by far the most economical dryer you can buy – the trade-off is they take a little longer to dry clothes.
