Initially, you might be wondering why we would be putting electric scooters into a budget feature in STACK, but allow us to explain. Once you get past the price tag, an e-scooter fast becomes both and an energy- and cost-efficient option not just for the city but for the suburbs too.

Cheap to run with no fuel costs, you don’t have to consider expensive registration or insurance fees in most states, and a single charge will take you (depending on the model) around 50km and above in distance. Speed-wise, you can expect to get up to around 25kph, and a fold-down design makes them portable if you do need to take a train or bus into the city. And not forgetting one of the most important factors when talking about riding an e-scooter: they’re so much fun to ride. So ditch the car and get mobile with the ultimate budget mode of transport.

Come glide with me! E-transport guide
If you do decide to invest in an e-scooter (and really, why wouldn’t you? They’re ace!), make sure you do your research. There are a plethora of inferior products available in the market at prices that seem too good to be true. With e-scooters, you really do get what you pay for, so it’s worth shooting for the best you can afford. The recommendations below are based on actual first-hand experience; we’ve been punishing the following three e-scooters for the last six months on a daily basis with absolutely no diminished performance issues. Beware, these e-scooters are extremely addictive!

Segway Ninebot Kickscooter Air T15
The T15 can fold down in seconds and its lightweight frame makes it a highly portable option. The difference here is in the way the scooter accelerates. Instead of a traditional handlebar grip throttle, the way the T15 gets moving is by good old foot power; the surface type is calculated and an automatic cruising speed is set. With a top speed of 20kph, the bonus with this scooter is when you brake, it generates power that goes back into the battery.

Segway Ninebot Kickscooter E22
A perfect road e-scooter, the wheels are foam-filled and two shock absorbers help smooth out any bumps in the road, while a bright LED headlight will help navigate any night-time trips. Top speed comes in at 21kph, however, if you attach an additional battery (sold separately), speed increases by 4kph and takes the range from 22km to a whopping 44km. A full charge should take around three hours.

Segway Ninebot Kickscooter Max
The Max is the e-scooter for on the road and off it too thanks to its inflatable tyres that make navigating rough terrain a breeze. It has a wide deck for ultimate comfort, and four different riding modes can be activated through the app. If tackling hills is a necessity, this is the e-scooter you’ve been looking for – it literally eats them for breakfast. A respectable speed of 25kph (faster downhill we can assure you) makes it a great all-rounder and one of the most popular models on the market.
