Straighteners provide the convenience of curling, but if more natural looking curls, waves and ringlets are your style, you’re going to need a dedicated curling iron or wand.

Ceramic curlers are good for frequent curling of all hair types, heat up faster and have a long lifespan, while automatic models take the stress out of curling that tress.

These devices are also a simple way to add volume to your locks and are designed for a variety of hair types and budgets – consider the texture of your hair and the size of the curls you want before shopping.

IRON OR WAND?
Both will work their magic on hair but there are differences. Curling irons (or tongs) utilise a spring-loaded clamp to hold hair in place for curling, whereas a wand has no clip and works by manually wrapping your hair section around the barrel. Wands are easier to use and add volume and a lustrous finish, while putting less stress on the hair and reducing split ends.

ROLL OUT THE BARREL
The size of a curler’s barrel determines the size of the curls – the smaller it is, the tighter the curls. 1–1.5 inches is best for mid-length and longer curls; newbies should start with a 1-inch barrel, which is good for any curl or hair type. Shorter barrels work best with short hair, so go bigger if there’s more of it and you want to add waves. A conical design delivers greater variation in your curling adventures, whereas a straight barrel creates more uniformed curls and ringlets. Some models even feature interchangeable barrels, so you can experiment with more styles on the one device.
