With the right kit, your hair can be in great hands every single day. From dryers, straighteners and curlers to that bothersome task of hair removal, there’s a personal grooming device for every hair type and budget.
A healthy, well-styled and maintained head of hair is something we all aspire to achieve. Not only is it a great confidence booster, it’s a personality statement, enhances natural beauty, and complements facial features and fashion choices.
When it comes to keeping your crowning glory in immaculate shape, there’s a wealth of tools available, starting with that staple of almost every domestic bathroom – the humble hair dryer. Although there’s nothing humble about the range of dryers available today, with many professional, salon-grade features finding their way into this ubiquitous home appliance.
Which dryer to choose largely depends upon your hair type and how you want to tame those tresses, so let’s run through some key features to look for in a dryer that will tackle the job with aplomb and create the style you desire.
HOW’S YOUR HAIR?
Is your hair long, short, thin, medium or thick? Does it have a tendency to frizz? Hair type and length are the first and most important considerations, as well as the style you’re looking to achieve. Certain dryers work better on certain hair types to achieve that salon-quality finish.
COMFORT AND EASE OF USE
A hairdryer is sometimes used every day, and that thing can get mighty heavy if you’re holding it for long periods – which you may well be, if you’re rocking a voluminous mane. It should be lightweight, well balanced, feel comfortable to hold and highly manoeuvrable in navigating your locks.
Most dryers feature multiple heat settings to benefit different hair types and shapes and minimise damage. High heat is good for fast drying and low heat for styling and drying fine or thin hair. A cool shot button is also a must for straightening curls and adding volume to fine hair – after initial heating, hit it with a cool blast to preserve your new shape. A dryer’s power is also a factor and measured in wattage – the higher it is, the hotter the air. Look for a dryer with at least 1500W, or higher for thick hair.
GO WITH THE FLOW
A dryer’s nozzle attachment concentrates the airflow on the desired area for smoothing or building volume. Pro dryers generally include two – regular and wide. A special diffuser attachment should be considered for curly hair as it softens the airflow for a defined, frizz-free finish.
CERAMIC OR IONIC?
The tech in pro dryers produces negatively charged ions that disperse moisture for quick drying, reducing frizz, and adding additional shine. Ceramic dryers provide even heat distribution and are good for all types of hair, while ionic is recommended for hair types that are difficult to dry.
REMINGTON PRO AIR TURBO HAIR DRYER
A quality, entry level dryer at a great price, the Pro Air packs a powerful 2400W, a turbo boost function to increase airflow, two speed options, three heat settings and a cool shot button. CeramicPlus tech ensures even heat distribution and Conditioning Ionic Technology will reduce frizz. Good for all hair types, the Pro Air excels when it comes to curls and includes a diffuser attachment. Light and perfectly balanced, you’ll get smooth and shiny styles every time.
PHILIPS MOISTURE PROTECT HAIR DRYER
With three heat and two speed settings, plus a cool shot button to lock in your style, this dryer gives you full control. Moisture Protect tech does what it says, using an infrared sensor that auto-adjusts the heat for optimal drying temperature – more moisture retention equals more shine and softness. Air Ionizer tech conditions as it dries, distributing moisture for healthy and shiny locks, and its versatile controls include four temperature settings, a cool shot button and two speed options. YOUR A-B-C FOR SMOOTH-DRYING HAIR
– Begin by lightly drying on medium heat until your hair is about 70% dry.
– Next, clip up the top three quarters of your hair onto the crown of your head. Sectioning your hair helps each section dry more quickly, and avoids over-drying.
– Dry the bottom layer on a higher heat setting and direct the airflow down the hair shaft to create a smooth finish. Continue with each section.
– Always direct the airflow downwards to keep the hair cuticle laying flat. Directing it up the hair shaft roughens the cuticle and creates frizz.
YOUR A-B-C FOR DRYING CURLY HAIR
– Tip your head forward and dry from the roots, then lightly place your curls on the diffuser claw.
– Move the diffuser close to your scalp, and gently lift hair at the roots to add volume.
– Dry 80% of your hair and allow the rest to air-dry. This will prevent drying out and frizz.
– Finish by gently scrunching the hair into shape and forming your style.
