Chromecast, the puck-shaped dongle that revolutionised content choice, has since evolved into Google Chromecast with Google TV, bringing smart functionality to any television with an HDMI port.

Google Chromecast with Google TV combines the features of Chromecast with Android TV, which not only means greater content choice but also convenient consolidation of streaming services, eliminating the need to constantly switch between apps. And if you’re weary of algorithms that suggest every vampire movie simply because you once watched Twilight, there’s the option to disable recommendations.

Chromecast required a smartphone or tablet pairing to access content, but Google Chromecast with Google TV has streamlined the process. All you need is a Google Account, a TV with an HDMI port, and a Wi-Fi connection. Plug it in, connect to the internet, and you’re good to go. Google Assistant voice control makes navigation a cinch, so even your tech-shy grandma can access the latest episodes of Midsomer Murders.

Google Chromecast with Google TV offers a high resolution experience with support for Full HD 1080p and 4K Ultra HD with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, although you will need a compatible 4K TV to enjoy the latter. Supported multi-channel audio formats include DTS, Dolby Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos.

The versatile Google Chromecast with Google TV can also be integrated with other devices if your smart home uses a Google ecosystem.

When added to the Google Home App and connected to a Nest security camera, for example, you can view real-time video, or more conveniently, access the live-feed from a video doorbell mid-movie to discover that the pizza has arrived. Content can also be enjoyed from anywhere in the home when connected to a Google Nesthub Max.

There is also a Guest Mode privacy setting to prevent visitors snooping through your watchlist or knowing your Wi-Fi password. This can be enabled using the Google Home app and guests can then open any Chromecast-enabled app on their device, tap the Cast button, select the Nearby device, and start watching. (Note: If the devices don’t automatically synch, a 4-digit PIN can be entered to enable connection.)
With its user-friendly interface, 4K and HDR support, smart home connectivity and consolidated streaming apps, the Google Chromecast with Google TV is one of the best media streaming devices on the market, and excellent value for the price.
