Hey ho, let’s go, it’s time for the 5 Tunes Show with your host Tim Lambert and an all-fresh cast featuring the sparkly talents of Sampa the Great, Odette with Gretta Ray, Confidence Man, Kwame, and Erthlings!
Sampa The Great, Energy ft. Nadeem Din-Gabisi
Some people make music, and others change it. The criminally underrated and unswervingly brilliant Sampa The Great has always fallen into the latter camp. The Melbourne-based rapper’s latest effort, Energy, is no different: poignant, soulful and transcending combining reggae tones with hip hop, jazz and traditional African sounds.
The newly crowned Triple J Unearthed Artist of the Year has kicked on his celebrations with the release of cracking new single Clouds and a fresh tour pegged for 2019. Premiered with radio king Zane Lowe on Beats1, the western Sydney rapper says the heaving track is about self-actualisation and living with purpose: “As humans, we’re not being taught about this – some find it narcissistic. I find that believing and loving yourself is so important, especially living in a world where you can be easily shut down and broken.”
Tickets to Kwame’s Clouds Tour are on sale now, dare say this is the last time you’ll see this prodigious young talent in venues of this size.

Erthlings, Cuts & Bruises
Heavyweight record label Future Classic (Flume, Flight Facilities, Chet Faker Nick Murphy) snapped this Sydney four-piece up a few months ago when they released their debut single Bridges. Since then, a couple of highly regarded sets at Bigsound and a tour support with another labelmate, G Flip, has seen the hype machine swing into action anticipating their girls’ next release. Their following single Cuts & Bruises sees a shift from the shoegaze indie pop to something a little more electronic and a lot moodier, showing maturity in their sound far beyond their high school ages.
Excitingly, the teenage group have been announced as supports on ARIA winner Amy Shark’s huge 2019 arena dates along with Slowly Slowly.

Odette & Gretta Ray, A Place That I Don’t Know
Two of Australia’s leading young songwriters have teamed up to cap 2018 off with a bang. Odette and Gretta Ray have released the mesmerising A Place That I Don’t Know – the newest addition to my playlist, Songs To Sit In The Shower And Cry To.
On pairing with Ray for the track, Odette says: “A Place That I Don’t Know is about being hurt and feeling isolated from your own home. I wrote this for me and Gretta to duet because her tone truly conveys the emotion I was trying to reach in this song. It’s about yearning for a love that’s let you down and trying to rebuild from something you didn’t even destroy.”
Ray was equally thrilled to be involved, saying: “I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to sing on an Odette song, after falling head over heels in love with her debut record To A Stranger. A Place That I Don’t Know is yet another song of hers that completely consumed me at first listen… the way that she conveys the emotions evoked by the song’s narrative through what is such a powerful yet equally vulnerable vocal tone gave me full body shivers, and I am just so thankful to have been involved in the making of such an exquisite, special track.”
The spellbinding singer has also just announced a second Melbourne date at the Corner Hotel due to overwhelming demand. Peep the tour dates below.

Confidence Man, Santa Is Coming Down The Chimney
Our favourite sassy duo Confidence Man have released the Christmas banger we all didn’t know we needed until now. I don’t have much else to say about it because singer Janet Planet has said it all here:
“It’s time to pop Bublé’s bubble. Throw Mariah in the fire. Christmas has a new sound and it just got a whole lot more confident. Christmas ain’t all eggnog and tinsel. Sometimes it gets a little dirty. Sometimes Santa skips the plate of cookies and goes straight for the whiskey. So unwrap yourself some sass and see what Santa’s really been up to. You’re welcome world.”
