Beirut GallipoliUnlike the Gallipoli familiar to most Australians, Beirut’s Zach Condon is referring here to a tiny town in southern Italy, where he ended up by chance and wrote the title track.

“We tell tales to be known,” it opens, joined by backing vocals like the ambient noise of a town square and a chattering beat. Condon sounds distant, sombre, even as the song itself is almost joyous. It’s the feeling of a celebration with someone you won’t see again for a long time, or the sound of a song that reminds you of the last place you felt lost. This is the line the album walks and Condon treads it beautifully.

Gallipoli is out February 1 via 4AD/Remote Control.
