The record opens with the sprawling seven-minute track I Followed The River South To What, which sees McCombs experimenting with his sound more than ever before. The combination of piano, saxophone and a fuzzed-out guitar enhances the stunning Absentee, while the spoken word delivery of Sleeping Volcanoes feels as though you’re on a journey with McCombs serving as your tour guide.
McCombs isn’t an artist you suspect has much more to prove, but what he does achieve with this album is show how taking your sound to new places can yield spectacular results.
