Live albums: they’re kind of like a Greatest Hits, right? Done poorly, they come across as a limp farewell. Done well – like this one – and they are a beautiful reminder of personal memories that you hold dear.
Guide Me Back Home is a live collection of tracks from emo-punk-folk idol and former Alexisonfire vocalist Dallas Green, under his guise as City and Colour. Recorded during a coast-to-coast Canadian tour, Guide Me Back Home is a stripped-back affair, and while the album doesn’t allow you to fully immerse yourself in any one discrete show (each song was recorded in a different city), it still feels really intimate. Green’s voice transcends, as it always has, and his recollections and stories before each song add another layer to the performances.
The 20 tracks featured include favourites The Girl, Sleeping Sickness and Casey’s Song, along with deeper cuts like Friends and As Much As I Ever Could. This is a beautiful collection from Canada’s favourite son, and enough to hold us over until new material is released in the near future.
Guide Me Back Home is out November 23 via Still Records/Dine Alone.
