Deerhunter’s eighth album proves they are just as important now as they were when they first emerged 15 years ago. Known for their dense compositions, we hear a remarkable vivacity on tracks like No One’s Sleeping and Element thanks to the utilisation of the harpsichord and horns.
Synths also play a starring role, with Greenpoint Gothic and Plains driven by stunning arrangements. The existential album title preludes What Happens To People? which has lead singer Bradford Cox musing on the human condition with remarkable poignancy.
Deerhunter’s ability to beguile remains firmly intact on this record, with the band’s constant evolution making for some dazzling moments that will linger in your mind.
Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? is out January 18 via 4AD/Remote Control.
