From one angle, My Own Pool Of Light looks very much like it’s going for an increasingly popular strain of arena rock: big, heart-swelling, arms-around-your-friends anthems handed down by The National and Arcade Fire, etc.
Not new territory for Holy Holy, but ground they’re comfortable and competent on.
In fact, Holy Holy’s third album never stops surprising, changing shapes between tracks for a diverse rock record bound by a sense of restlessness. My Own Pool Of Light tries on slinky funk verses on Faces, evokes the Thunderstruck riff on Sandra, skirts trip-hop on Starting Line and catches New Wave with Frida on the way out. These two make it look almost too easy.
My Own Pool Of Light by Holy Holy is out August 2 via Sony.
