Neil Young wrote in his autobiography: “J.J.’s guitar playing is a huge influence on me; his touch is unspeakable.”
If you’re not familiar with J.J. Cale’s music, this posthumously released album – the first since his death in 2013 – is representative of his trademark sound: minimal, sinuous, bluesy guitar lines and mumbly, near-whispered vocals popularised by Clapton, Dire Straits and others. These previously unreleased tracks – a hybrid of blues, country and folk – will be welcomed by old fans and hopefully, embraced by new ones.
