Jamila Woods makes art, music and poetry. In her hometown of Chicago she also makes ways for other people’s voices to be heard – for years Jamila has helped host and run the largest youth poetry festival in the world, ‘Louder Than a Bomb’.
Legacy! Legacy! is a hip hop and soul dedication to the voices who came before; a tribute to activists, thinkers and artists whose own works changed the world. Where Jamila’s debut Heavn addressed love of self, and love of Chicago, this follow-up is filled with songs named for people who inspired Jamila’s path. But as poet Hanif Abdurraqib writes in an album statement: ““More than just giving the song titles the names of historical black and brown icons of literature, art, and music, Jamila Woods builds a sonic and lyrical monument to the various modes of how these icons tried to push beyond the margins a country had assigned to them.”
And so each song of Legacy! Legacy! towers with the energy and ideas of its namesakes. Eartha Kitt, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Sun Ra, James Baldwin, and Octavia Butler, among others. Jamila’s stories, deep jazz grooves and heavy hip hop breaks also shine as a beacon for others, in turn, to follow.
Legacy! Legacy! is out May 10 via Jagjaguwar/Inertia.
