Sometimes the most unpredictable move a controversial artist can make is the most conventional. For his third solo album, Kirin J Callinan has done a covers album. But, unsurprisingly, it’s more perverse than pop hits.
The record opens with his take on Live Is Life, originally by Austrian band Opus. He then launches into Momus’ The Homosexual, before tackling Randy Newman’s Pretty Boy, Billy Field’s You Weren’t In Love With Me, Ultravox’s Vienna and PiL’s Rise (in which he addresses his “error of judgement” at the 2017 ARIA Awards).
The title is a little misleading – Callinan will always be left-of-centre. And this is a strange, but compelling trip.
Return To Center by Kirin J Callinan is out now.
