Bobbie Gentry is famously known for her intriguing narrative that is Ode To Bille Joe – she’s an incredible influence on so many with her country blues storytelling. Experimental rock band Mercury Rev have revisited Gentry’s under-appreciated second album The Delta Sweete (1968), a concept record based on modern life in the deep South.
The Rev reimagine the entire album with an outstanding lineup of female voices including Margo Price, Hope Sandoval, Vashti Bunyan, Norah Jones and others, backed by hauntingly beautiful, lush orchestral arrangements. Then there’s Lucinda Williams with the bonus stand-out version of Ode, a song that didn’t appear on the Sweete but is a little icing on this delicious cake.
Bobbie Gentry’s Delta Sweete Revisited is out February 15 via Bella Union/PIAS.
