Sometimes in your newsfeed you stumble across one of those articles: ‘Sixteen or seventeen beautiful words with no English translation.’

Maybe the list contains your favourite from Portuguese, Saudade, meaning “a longing for an absent something or someone you love which may never return.” Or Forelsket, Norwegian for “the euphoria experienced as you begin to fall in love.” You keep reading, but it’s pretty clear the authors of this article have never listened to Sasami. The Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist, composer, and singer-songwriter is also a skilled chronicler of the heart, conveying nuances of everyday life and love with a vocabulary all her own. The playful pop moments, textured rock, and electronic elements combine to produce a catalogue of human feeling that’s hard to translate but easy to love.

A chat with Sasami.
