Soulfly RitualMax Cavalera has been a busy man in recent years. I’ve lost count of every album he’s released of late, but it seems as if he’s on a mission of some kind.

While I might not be as enamoured by his work as I once was – my interest dropped after Sepultura released Arise back in 1991 – I do respect his work ethic. More importantly, Cavalera has been slowly but surely returning to his roots.

It’s a bit odd hearing this transition develop under the Soulfly banner, as the band started as a groove/nu-metal entity, but I’ll take it. The riffs are plentiful and the aggression recalls the thrash metal days of old.

Ritual is out now via Nuclear Blast/Caroline.
