Brutalism is an interrogation of main Drum Jonny Pierce’s unravelling life.
Pitching itself as “self-care focused,” lead single Body Chemistry asks “Maybe I’m depressed/ Or maybe I know too much about the world.” The solution? A “good f–k” and “a nice glass of wine,” offered over zipping First Impressions of Earth-era guitars.
Much of the record feels like a delicious throwback to the mid-aughts, from the burbling dance-rock of Pretty Cloud to the chirpy clatter of melodies on Kiss It Away. Is this regression or learning from the past? Whatever it is: more of it, cheers.
Brutalism is out April 5 via ANTI-.
