For almost two decades, Cincinnati band The National have built their entire career around the billowing, hallowed and incomparable voice of Matt Berninger. It’s strange concept to consider a record by the lucid five-piece without Berninger as the centrepiece, but here we are.
Created in collaboration with Los Angeles filmmaker Mike Mills, I Am Easy To Find lives in union with a short film (directed by Mills) by the same title. This album quickly became much more than Berninger belting out the slow burners for which The National are loved; the band welcomed a bevy of female vocalists to contribute to this record, led by Sharon Van Etten and Gail Ann Dorsey.
These vocal offerings quickly stamp themselves as not only the showpiece of The National’s most surprising album to date, but the lightbulb moment in their realisation that there might be more to what they stand for than chugging guitars and baritone.
